The first format type is fine for average needs and leaves data unrecovrable to the vast majority of people, excluding talented hackers and recovery experts.

The second one is Department of Defense (DoD) compliant and is for the customer who must erase sensitive work data, financial/personal records, or simply needs to feel secure about data being erased permanently.
